I really liked that the author wasnt afraid to make if feel like real war, everything that happened to the main characters had consequences that they had to deal with till the end. On one hand you want whats best for the characters, you want them to get the happy ever after fantasy, but war isnt kind, its cruel and brutal. So while they found peace in the end a place where they would be safe, there is no serenity because they went thru hell to find it and it shows.
