Between 2005 and 2009, the bodies of these women were found around the canals and crawfish ponds of Jennings, Louisiana, a town of 10,000 in Jefferson Davis Parish. Known as the Jeff Davis 8, they were among society’s most vulnerable—impoverished, abused, and struggling with mental illness, often engaging in sex work for survival. Local law enforcement quickly pursued a serial killer theory, leading to extensive media coverage and heightened panic within Jennings’ class-divided neighborhoods. However, as the cases remained unsolved, the community began to question the integrity of the investigation. Rumors of police corruption, evidence tampering, and collusion between law enforcement and the local underworld emerged, casting doubt on the serial killer narrative. What transpired in the Boudreaux Inn, a decrepit motel where many of these women were last seen? Why were the crimes unresolved, and why were police officers facing indictments? Through muckraking research and immersive journalism over five years, the author reviewed thousands of pages of homicide files to uncover the truth behind each victim's final hours.
