Autobiografický román, v ktorom nachádzame reálne miesta a reálnych ľudí. Ako prezrádza nadpis, hlavné postavy sú dve: autorova babka Toňa, ktorá pochádzala z Ukrajiny a v tretej aliji (prisťahovaleckej vlne) sa dostala do Palestíny, a obrovský americký vysávač, ktorý jej poslal z Ameriky švagor Ješajahu. Ten kedysi emigroval do Ameriky, kde „rozbehol biznis a zmenil si meno na Sam” - na rozdiel od svojho brata Aharona, ktorý „nikdy nezradil izraelskú zem, vysušoval močiare a vyorával prvé brázdy“. Preňho bol brat Ješajahu dvojnásobný zradca, lebo emigráciou zradil vlasť a nebol „sionista ani socialista“. Jeho pohoršenie vzrástlo, keď mu brat z Ameriky poslal doláre, lebo v Palestíne vládla veľká bieda. „Špinavé kapitalistické“ peniaze poslal naspäť. To zas urazilo a nahnevalo Ješajahua a vymyslel pomstu: bratovej žene Toni poslal obrovský vysávač, ktorý brat nemohol vrátiť, lebo jednak na odoslanie takého obrovského nákladu nemal peniaze a jednak Toňa bola posadnutá čistotou a novú zbraň privítala s otvoreným náručím. Je to ústredná metafora románu. Tonin boj, snaha zachovať všetko čisté, je márny. Nakoniec ju „zradí“ aj samotný vysávač: zistí totiž, že aj v samotnej najmocnejšej zbrani proti večnej špine, vo veľkom americkom vysávači, sa skrýva nazhromaždená špina, ba „dokonca z nej uniká“.

Na cintoríne sa jeden osemdesiatročný Američan, niekdajší príslušník Palmachu, rozhovorí o akomsi chlapcovi, ktorý počas bitky o kláštor tesne pred smrťou vypustil poštového holuba za svojím dievčaťom do Tel Avivu. Nevieme, kto je tento chlapec, nevie to ani rozprávač Jair Mendelson, zatiaľ nevieme nič ani o tom dievčati... Košatý príbeh sa pred čitateľmi rozvíja, priberá ďalšie postavy a motívy a na konci zakročí aj smrť; akoby trest za to, že v živote nebolo všetko kóšer.
