The story follows Jane Eyre, a young orphan mistreated by her wealthy aunt, Mrs. Reed. After a violent encounter with her cousin, Jane is locked in a terrifying room where she believes she sees her deceased uncle's ghost. Rescued by kind figures, she is sent to Lowood School, where she faces harsh conditions under the tyrannical headmaster, Mr. Brocklehurst. There, she forms a complex friendship with Helen Burns, whose stoic acceptance of suffering challenges Jane's own views on endurance and injustice.
