Life was once idyllic for Liz and Jack Sutherland, who built a loving family and a successful law practice near San Francisco. However, their world shatters on Christmas morning when a five-minute errand leads to tragedy, leaving Liz to navigate the overwhelming grief of losing her husband. Alone and heartbroken, she must also support their five children, including one with special needs. Drawing strength from her children's love, Liz returns to work and embraces her dual role as both mother and father, coaching her youngest son for the Special Olympics. As the holidays pass—Valentine's Day, Easter, July 4th—Liz grapples with her loss while trying to create a semblance of normalcy for her family. Just before Labor Day, another crisis strikes when her oldest son is hospitalized, introducing her to Dr. Bill Webster, who becomes a source of friendship and support. As summer fades into fall, Liz begins to find hope in this new relationship, reflecting on her losses and the small blessings that sustain her. As the first anniversary of Jack's death approaches, Liz faces one final challenge before she can embrace the changes of the past year and look forward to a new beginning.
