David grows up with constant reminders to maintain purity and watch for mutants. Initially, he accepts these beliefs, but he is profoundly disturbed when his devout parents force his aunt to abandon her abnormal child. Eventually, David discovers he possesses a unique ability that could either lead to his death or open the door to a new world of freedom. This narrative is a masterfully crafted piece of classic science fiction, echoing themes relevant today, as genetic and religious fundamentalism continue to rise, reflecting the tensions of the Cold War era in which it was written.
