Maskull, seeking adventure, accepts an invitation from Krag, a friend of Nightspore, to travel to Tormance after a séance. They embark on a crystal ship from an abandoned Scottish observatory, but Maskull awakens alone on Tormance. Throughout his journey, he encounters a few individuals, often leading to their deaths, either by his own hand or another's. He learns of his impending death, reunites with Krag, and ultimately discovers he is Nightspore. The narrative concludes with Krag, who identifies himself as "Pain," revealing profound insights about the Universe's origin, aligning with a variation of the Demiurge doctrine.
