Set in Victorian times, the story follows Ruth Hilton, an orphaned seamstress who faces societal condemnation after being seduced and abandoned by a gentleman. Pregnant and alone, she finds refuge with a minister and his sister, who help her maintain the facade of widowhood to shield her child from stigma. As Ruth builds a respectable life as a governess, her past resurfaces with the return of Bellingham, jeopardizing her newfound status and the future of her child.
