The narrative follows Ishmael, a sailor aboard the whaling ship Pequod, under the obsessive command of Captain Ahab, who seeks vengeance against the legendary whale, Moby Dick. Ahab's quest for revenge stems from a devastating encounter that cost him his leg. As the voyage unfolds, Ahab's fixation leads to tragic consequences, culminating in a fateful confrontation with Moby Dick. Ishmael, the sole survivor, clings to Queequeg's coffin for survival until rescued by the ship Rachel, which ironically continues its own search for a lost crew.
