Set against the backdrop of World War I, the story follows twin sisters Peggy and Maude, who navigate life in Oxford while working in a bindery. Peggy, yearning for knowledge beyond her binding duties, becomes inspired by the female students of Somerville College. In contrast, Maude cherishes her simple life but is vulnerable and needs Peggy's protection. As Belgian refugees arrive, Peggy's aspirations clash with her feelings for a Belgian soldier, forcing her to confront the challenges of love, responsibility, and personal growth amid the turmoil of war.
