All accounts agree that the northern inhabitants meet trespassers with swords, while ancient Elder monsters are rumored to lurk beyond. Amid this chaos, the mercenary company known as the Crimson Guard ventures forth, not for contracts but in search of answers to mysteries that Shimmer, their second-in-command, questions whether they should pursue. Joining them is the bard Fisher kel Tath, accompanied by a Tiste Andii who washed ashore with no memory but holds immense power. Also heading north is Whiteblade, a champion who once fought for the Malazans and wields a sword capable of slaying gods. Meanwhile, far to the south, Silverfox, the newly incarnated Summoner of the T'lan Imass, stands guard, determined to prevent the resurgence of an ancient crusade that threatens to devastate the continent.
