Bored and somewhat cynical Ransome and the delicate, dreamy Fern form a small enclave of Europeans in the Indian town of Ranchipur. The regular rhythm of their settled community is disrupted by the arrival of the beautiful Lady Heston. Her appearance and nature seem out of place in India, like a stunning butterfly that dazzles and is about to fly away. A natural disaster strikes Ranchipur, testing the characters of all its inhabitants and changing their lives. In a single night, fragile Fern, who dreams of great love, becomes a support for Tom, and their affection may blossom into deep romantic feelings. Lady Heston, accustomed to wealth and male admiration, also finds the love of her life and, in an instant, rejects the superficial values she once clung to.
