Malý život je pro mě jedna z nejtěžších knih na hodnocení. Když jsem ji začala číst, nevěděla jsem o ní prakticky nic. Četla jsem ji v originále a od prvních stránek jsem byla naprosto pohlcená. Yanagihara píše nádherným jazykem, její postavy působí živě a atmosféra New Yorku devadesátých let mě úplně vtáhla. Po dobu zhruba dvou týdnů, kdy jsem knihu četla, jsem na ni myslela neustále. Právě proto mě překvapilo, jak moc se moje pocity změnily po dočtení. Druhá polovina knihy mi nepřišla vyloženě horší, ale zbytečně natahovaná. Čím větší jsem od knihy měla odstup, tím víc jsem přemýšlela nad tím, proč vlastně byla napsána právě takhle. Malý život je bezpochyby jeden z nejsilnějších čtenářských zážitků, jaké jsem kdy měla. Zároveň ale chápu kritiku, teď možná budu pro někoho spoilerovat, že některé traumatické události působí vykonstruovaně a nahromaděné jen proto, aby čtenáře šokovaly. Místy jsem měla pocit, že autorce na Judeovi nezáleží jako na člověku, ale spíš jako na nástroji pro vyvolání co nejsilnější emocionální reakce. Nakonec tedy nevím, jestli tuhle knihu miluji, nebo nemám ráda. Vím jen, že na ni nedokážu zapomenout.
