As the New Year approaches, Armand Gamache faces accusations of cowardice while the village of Three Pines enjoys winter festivities. His holiday with family is disrupted by a request to provide security for a seemingly innocuous lecture by Professor Abigail Robinson at a nearby university. Confused by the assignment, Gamache investigates Robinson and uncovers a disturbing agenda that prompts him to urge the university to cancel the event. However, they refuse, citing academic freedom and accusing him of censorship. As Robinson’s controversial views infiltrate community discussions, the atmosphere shifts from conversation to heated arguments, blurring the lines between truth and delusion. The village becomes divided, and chaos ensues as Robinson claims that following her will lead to a better future. When a murder occurs, it is up to Gamache, his second-in-command Jean-Guy Beauvoir, and their team to unravel the crime and confront the extraordinary delusion gripping their community. The situation escalates into a profound examination of the madness of crowds, challenging the very fabric of reality.
