In the small English township of Swampshire, Beatrice Steele defies the strict expectations of a true lady. Lacking skills in needlework, music, and art, she lives with her marriage-minded mother, prankster father, and two younger sisters—beautiful Louisa and forgettable Mary. Beatrice harbors a secret obsession with true crime, often trying to solve cases she reads about, a passion that could ruin her standing in their etiquette-obsessed community. With the upcoming autumn ball, the Steele family hopes Louisa will win the heart of eligible bachelor Edmund Croaksworth, as failure means their estate could fall to their repulsive cousin, Martin Grub, forcing them into a life in mime-infested France. Beatrice must maintain her decorum, but her plans are disrupted when a disgraced detective arrives at the ball. The evening spirals into chaos when Croaksworth suddenly dies during a dance, and a storm traps them all inside. Panic and fear take hold as they realize a killer is among them.
