Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century America, the story follows Belton Piedmont, a poor Black man who becomes an activist after enduring racial violence. His journey intertwines with his wealthy friend Bernard Belgrave, who attends Harvard while Belton fights against segregation in Nashville. After a traumatic incident leads to a high-profile trial, Belton's life takes a dramatic turn when he reunites with Bernard in Texas, where a group of Black nationalists seeks to create a separate state. This novel highlights themes of racial injustice and the quest for autonomy.
