Maggie Hope travels to Hollywood to solve a crime that resonates deeply with her past and confronts the evil she thought she had escaped in Europe. In 1943 Los Angeles, as the Allies push back against the Nazis and the U.S. military advances towards Tokyo, the city’s vibrant nightlife contrasts sharply with a darker reality. A woman is found dead in a pool at a trendy hotel, and Maggie learns that she was engaged to her former love, John Sterling, who suspects foul play. Despite the challenges of leaving a besieged London and flying across the world, Maggie feels compelled to help John. Upon arriving, she discovers a city rife with division, echoing the turmoil in Europe, with the Zoot Suit Riots and the Ku Klux Klan looming large. As she grapples with the complexities of her homeland, Maggie is eager to reconnect with John. However, her focus quickly shifts to the investigation.
