Set in the summer of 1965, the story follows Sheriff Robert Gallegos, a determined Native American/Hispanic ex-Marine, as he confronts the violent encroachment of the Juarez drug cartel in his rural New Mexico community. Amidst rising intimidation and crime, he relies on the wisdom of Old Lady Sara Tree-Root Tampoya, a part-Hopi Medicine Woman, to navigate his past and identity. The narrative captures the vibrant yet perilous atmosphere of Aragon Valley, where outsiders are welcomed but cartel threats loom large.
