In the summer of 1957, Atticus Turner and his father, Montrose, journey to North Carolina to commemorate their ancestor's escape from slavery by retracing his route into the Great Dismal Swamp. However, an encounter with an old adversary turns their historical journey into a perilous life-and-death chase. Meanwhile, in Chicago, George Berry battles cancer and makes a dangerous pact with the ghost of Hiram Winthrop, who offers a miraculous cure—but only if George can resurrect him first. Fifteen-year-old Horace Berry, grappling with the recent murder of a close friend, joins his mother, Hippolyta, and her friend Letitia Dandridge on a research trip to Nevada for The Safe Negro Travel Guide. Hippolyta harbors a secret agenda that will take them to the far reaches of the universe, bringing a new threat to Letitia's home. Additionally, Letitia's sister, Ruby, is living a double life as her white alter ego, Hillary Hyde, and faces chaos when her supply of transformation potion runs low. As these tensions build, the return of Caleb Braithwhite, stripped of his magic and banished from Chicago, complicates matters further. He seeks to reclaim his power and settle old scores, intensifying the looming dangers for all involved.
