The Knights of the Golden Circle was the largest and most dangerous clandestine organization in American history, amassing billions in stolen gold and silver buried in hidden caches across the U.S. Since 1865, treasure hunters have sought this immense wealth, but little has been found. Now, two factions of the remaining knights are vying for the lost treasure—one seeks to exploit it, while the other aims to preserve it. Former Justice Department agent Cotton Malone finds himself drawn into this conflict, with a deeper connection to the knights than he realized. Central to the story is the Smithsonian Institution, intertwined with the knights and Malone through his ancestor, Confederate spy Angus Cotton Adams, whose history is pivotal. Complicating the situation are the ambitions of a reckless Speaker of the House and the bitter widow of a U.S. Senator, who are plotting radical changes. Meanwhile, Malone and Cassiopeia Vitt confront the past, while ex-president Danny Daniels and Stephanie Nelle face a new threat that could cost one of them their life. From the Smithsonian's backrooms to rural Arkansas and the rugged mountains of northern New Mexico, this adventure delves into America's dark past and hints at an even darker future.
