Yonah Toledano, a 15-year-old son of a renowned silversmith, has already lost his father and brother to the chaos, their deaths overlooked amid widespread turmoil. Determined to honor his family's memory, he resolves to remain a Jew. With his donkey, Moise, Yonah embarks on a winding journey across Spain, working manual labor to preserve the remnants of his culture. As a shepherd, he whispers forgotten Hebrew to the stars, and as an apprentice armorer, he learns to fight like a knight. Living under the constant threat of the Inquisition, he grapples with his past and seeks answers about his identity. His journey leads him to a strong Marrano woman, and he navigates a life where he presents himself as a respected Old Christian physician while secretly maintaining his Jewish faith.
