On a deserted road late at night, Scotland Yard's Ian Rutledge encounters a frightened woman standing over a body, sparking an inquiry that leads him into the lair of a stealthy killer and the depths of his own memories. After his sister's wedding, a restless Rutledge drives aimlessly, haunted by the past, and narrowly misses a car stopped in the middle of the road. Beside the vehicle, a woman with blood on her hands insists she didn't kill Stephen Wentworth. She claims a stranger stepped in front of their car, fired a shot, and vanished. With no trace of the shooter, Rutledge, a witness after the fact, persuades the Yard to let him lead the inquiry. Yet, he grapples with whether he is seeking justice or escaping painful memories. Wentworth was well-liked, but his bitter family paints him as a murderer. Who did Wentworth kill? Is his death retribution, or has his companion lied? The village of Wolf Pit has a notorious history, having witnessed the last wolf in England's demise in Medieval times. When a second suspicious death occurs, evidence suggests a dangerous predator is on the loose, with death closer to Rutledge than he realizes.
