Melville, an influential American novelist and poet of the Renaissance period, is known for his works such as Typee and Moby-Dick. His writing, rich in vocabulary and rhythm, often explores the complexities of American society during a time of rapid change, drawing from his experiences at sea and his philosophical inquiries. Born in New York City in 1819, Melville faced financial difficulties after his father's death, leading him to become a sailor in 1839. His early adventures inspired his first book, Typee, which became a bestseller and encouraged his marriage to Elizabeth Shaw. Despite initial successes, Melville's later works, including Moby-Dick and Pierre, received mixed reviews and commercial failures. He published several notable short stories in the mid-1850s, which were later compiled as The Piazza Tales. After a brief career as a Customs Inspector, Melville turned to poetry, reflecting on moral questions during the Civil War in his collection Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War.
