The book examines the evolving dynamics between the US government and its citizens during advanced neoliberalism, characterized by diminished geopolitical power and pervasive surveillance. It highlights the emergence of "exceptional citizens," predominantly white Christian males, who uphold the security state while others engage in humanitarian efforts to address its shortcomings. Through case studies, including microfinance in the global South and the impact of post-9/11 policies on Muslim charities, the author reveals the inherent contradictions and racial, gender, and religious tensions within the US neoliberal framework.
