When Special Agent Kathryn Dance, an expert interrogator and kinesics specialist with the California Bureau of Investigation, is tasked with questioning convicted killer Daniel Pell, she feels both apprehension and excitement. Pell is serving life for the brutal murders of the Croyton family, a crime reminiscent of Charles Manson's infamous acts in the 1960s. Unlike Manson, Pell's cult was caught, leaving behind a survivor, the youngest Croyton daughter, known as the Sleeping Doll, who has remained silent about that night. As Dance interrogates Pell, she aims to extract a confession for a recent murder and delve into the mind of a man who sees himself as a manipulative puppet master. However, when Pell escapes, leaving chaos in his wake, Dance is thrust into her first manhunt. As the picturesque Monterey Peninsula grapples with the threat of the elusive killer, Dance investigates the past, seeking the truth about Pell's actions. She tracks down the now-teenage Sleeping Doll and reunites three women from Pell's cult to uncover buried secrets. As Dance confronts the lies of the past and the present, she races against time to reveal the truth about Pell before he strikes again.
