After a tragic loss, eleven-year-old Ollie finds comfort in books. When she encounters a frantic woman at the river threatening to toss a book into the water, Ollie impulsively steals it. As she reads, she discovers a chilling story about a girl named Beth, two brothers who love her, and a sinister figure known as "the smiling man," who grants wishes at a dire cost. Ollie becomes engrossed in the tale, but her school trip to Smoke Hollow, a local farm with a dark past, reveals a shocking connection: the graves of the characters from her book. Is the story about the smiling man real? Ollie has little time to ponder this when their school bus breaks down, forcing their teacher to return to the farm for help. The eerie bus driver warns the remaining students, "Best get moving. At nightfall they'll come for the rest of you." As darkness approaches, Ollie's broken digital wristwatch, a keepsake from happier times, starts a countdown and ominously instructs her to RUN. Only Ollie and two classmates heed the warning. They venture into the woods, bordered by watchful scarecrows, while the bus driver advises them to "avoid large places" and "keep to small." Thus begins a thrilling and spine-chilling adventure filled with suspense.
