Set on Mars, the story follows John Carter as he returns to the planet to find his wife, Dejan Thoris, missing. He becomes embroiled in conflict with the aggressive Black Men of Mars, who kidnap and enslave others. Featuring intense action, the narrative includes the first epic air battle between flying battleships. Along the way, Carter befriends Thusia, a devoted Red Maid, and Xodar, a formidable Black Pirate. The plot is driven by numerous battles and escapes, culminating in a climactic final confrontation.
