A swashbuckling adventure reveals how Diego de la Vega became the iconic masked hero. Born in late 18th-century southern California, Diego is a blend of two worlds, with an aristocratic Spanish father and a Shoshone warrior mother. He learns the ways of his mother’s tribe from his grandmother, White Owl, while also mastering fencing and cattle branding from his father. His childhood is filled with mischief and adventure, during which he witnesses the brutal injustices faced by Native Americans, sparking an inner conflict about his heritage. At sixteen, Diego is sent to Barcelona for education, where he joins La Justicia, a secret resistance movement opposing Napoleonic corruption. Amidst this turmoil, he falls in love, saves the oppressed, and confronts a rival from privilege. Between California and Barcelona, the persona of Zorro emerges, marking the birth of a great hero. After numerous adventures, including duels, fierce sea battles, and daring rescues, Diego returns to America to reclaim his childhood hacienda and seek justice for those unable to fight for themselves.
