Set during the American Civil War, the story follows five Northern POWs who escape by commandeering a hydrogen balloon. Their journey leads them to a remote volcanic island, which they name Lincoln Island in honor of Abraham Lincoln. With the ingenuity of engineer Cyrus Smith and the skills of his companions, they establish a self-sufficient life, creating essential tools and a home in a cliffside cave. This adventure combines themes of survival, innovation, and camaraderie as they navigate the challenges of their new environment.
