During a truce in the third Crusade, Sir Kenneth encounters a Saracen Emir on his journey to Syria, and they discuss love and necromancy while heading to the hermit Theodoric's cave. The hermit, in correspondence with the pope, provides them with refreshment and later leads Sir Kenneth to a chapel where he sees Lady Edith, the object of his affection. Meanwhile, King Richard Coeur de Lion falls ill, and Sir Kenneth, accompanied by a Moorish physician, seeks to restore the king's health. After the physician administers a potion from a talisman, Richard awakens, but political intrigue brews as Conrade of Montserrat conspires to undermine Richard's authority by inciting Leopold of Austria to plant his banner beside England's in the camp. As tensions rise, Sir Kenneth is tasked with guarding the English standard overnight but is distracted by a message from Lady Edith. During his absence, the banner is stolen, and his dog is injured. Overwhelmed with guilt, he encounters the physician, who suggests seeking Saladin's protection for Lady Edith. Sir Kenneth decides to confront Richard about the Sultan's intentions but faces a death sentence instead. After the intervention of the hermit and the physician, Richard spares him but forbids future appearances. Disguised as a Nubian slave, Sir Kenneth later saves Richard from an assassin's dagger and offers to uncover the thief of the standard, intertwining fate and loyalty amidst the back
