Set against a backdrop of moral decay, the drama follows peasant Nikita, whose seduction of orphan Marinka leads to a series of tragic events. After abandoning Marinka, he marries Anisija, who commits murder to be with him. The cycle of violence continues as Nikita, influenced by his wife, kills their newborn. Ultimately, on the day of his stepdaughter's wedding, he confesses his crimes to the authorities. The play explores themes of guilt, betrayal, and the consequences of unchecked desires.
