The story follows Rose Campbell, a recently orphaned girl who moves in with her wealthy great aunts in Boston. Struggling with loneliness and health issues, her life transforms when her guardian, Uncle Alec, returns and introduces unconventional child-rearing methods that promote her happiness and well-being. As Rose navigates her new family dynamics with seven boy cousins and numerous aunts and uncles, she befriends Phebe, a young housemaid whose optimistic outlook helps Rose appreciate her privileges and find her place in the world.
