When France fell to the Nazis in 1939, Churchill vowed that Britain would resist the German advance, even if alone. He established the Special Operations Executive to create unique military units that would operate independently behind enemy lines. These units, licensed to kill and deniable by the British government, aimed to counter the advancing Germans. The first of these "butcher-and-bolt" units, the Maid Honour Force, was led by the eccentric Gus March-Phillipps and a fierce Danish warrior, Anders Lassen. Fueled by amphetamines, this group of renegades undertook Churchill's initial special operations mission to capture Nazi shipping in Fernando Po, West Africa. Although few of these early operatives survived WWII, they engaged in daring missions that significantly impacted the war. This marked the inception of modern special operations teams, with all involved ultimately recognized as war heroes. The narrative delves into the lives of a dozen extraordinary men, intertwining their stories of brotherhood, camaraderie, and elite soldiering, from their first missions to Anders Lassen's tragic death just weeks before the war's conclusion.
