The author, known for his children's literature under the pen name James Otis, began his career as a journalist and later transitioned into writing for young readers. His debut work, "Toby Tyler; or, Ten Weeks with a Circus," tells the tale of an orphan who escapes to join a circus, reflecting themes of adventure and self-discovery. Kaler's diverse experiences, including roles in journalism and education, influenced his storytelling. After a stint in the southeastern U.S., he returned to Maine to serve as a school superintendent in South Portland.
