There’s a thin line between hero and villain, and I navigate it daily. My reputation often precedes me, even when I make questionable choices for the right reasons. This leads to a night in the back of a police car, resulting in community service at a ranch owned by Jo Shelton, a woman who has made it clear she dislikes me, despite our past friendship. I’d rather face jail than work alongside her, but I show up every day, ready to put in the effort. As I spend time with Jo, I realize that being around someone I dislike is easier than being near someone I find intensely attractive but cannot have. Jo, with her quiet strength and beauty, is in a relationship with a man who doesn’t help on the ranch. I feel possessive of her time and attention, even if I shouldn’t. Then, unexpectedly, her blue eyes see through my tough exterior, revealing a wound I’ve tried to hide. In that moment and many others, I realize I’m in love with Jo and desperate to prove I’m worthy of her affection. Despite my struggles, I know that when it comes to rising to the occasion, no one does it better than an outlaw.
