Viac o knihe

Charles Kingsley (12 June 1819 - 23 January 1875) was a multifaceted figure: a broad church priest, university professor, social reformer, historian, and novelist. He is notably linked to Christian socialism, the working men's college, and the establishment of labor cooperatives that, despite their failures, paved the way for progressive labor reforms. A friend of Charles Darwin, he was also the uncle of explorer and scientist Mary Kingsley. Born in Holne, Devon, he was the elder son of Reverend Charles Kingsley and Mary Lucas Kingsley. His siblings, Henry and Charlotte, also pursued writing. Kingsley spent his early years in Clovelly, where his father served as Curate and Rector, and later in Barnack, Northamptonshire. He attended Bristol Grammar School and Helston Grammar School before studying at King's College London and the University of Cambridge, graduating from Magdalene College in 1842. He chose a clerical path, becoming rector of Eversley in 1844, chaplain to Queen Victoria in 1859, and Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge in 1860. He also served as a private tutor to the Prince of Wales. In 1869, Kingsley resigned from his professorship and became a canon of Chester Cathedral, where he founded the Chester Society for Natural Science, Literature and Art, contributing to the Grosvenor Museum's establishment. He later served as President of the Birmingham and Midland Institute and was made a canon of Westm
