The narrative follows an anonymous, introspective wanderer in late 19th-century Oslo, grappling with hunger and existential despair. Throughout his journey, he interacts with various eccentric characters, particularly Ylajali, a young woman who captivates him. Adhering to a personal code of chivalry, he aids the needy while struggling with self-destructive tendencies. Despite achieving some success as a writer, he finds creativity increasingly elusive. The story culminates with his decision to escape the city by joining a ship's crew, reflecting his tumultuous quest for meaning and survival.
