James Otis Kaler, writing as James Otis, was a prolific American author known for his children's literature. His debut book, Toby Tyler; or, Ten Weeks with a Circus, tells the tale of an orphan who escapes to join a circus, capturing the adventurous spirit of youth. Kaler's diverse career included roles as a journalist, editor, and school superintendent, reflecting his deep engagement with both literature and education. After years in the southeastern states, he returned to Maine, where he became the first superintendent in South Portland.
