A number-one New York Times bestseller upon its release, this work is central to J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative writing, with origins dating back long before THE HOBBIT. Tolkien regarded it as his most significant creation, and though published posthumously, it lays the groundwork for all his other writings. It recounts the world's creation and the First Age, serving as the ancient backdrop for characters in THE LORD OF THE RINGS, some of whom, like Elrond and Galadriel, participated in its events. Central to the narrative are the three Silmarils, jewels crafted by Feanor, the most gifted of the Elves, which contained the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor before their destruction by Morgoth, the first Dark Lord.
