Chen's encounters with the wolves awaken a primitive instinct within him, leading to obsession and reverence. However, peace is shattered when Han Chinese from the cities arrive to modernize the grasslands, launching a campaign to exterminate the wolves. This disrupts the delicate balance maintained for centuries, leading to the extinction of both wolves and Mongol culture, and causing ecological devastation. Dust storms from Mongolia even reach Beijing, blocking out the moon. This tale serves as a poignant social commentary on the dangers of rapid economic growth and offers a deep immersion into Chinese culture.
