The advent of Leslie Searle was not a particularly fortunate happening for the village of Salcott St Mary. Of all the people whose lives he touched few were wholly glad of his coming. The American photographer possessed an almost inhuman beauty, something not quite of the world of men, and his presence aroused a variety of violent emotions in the small community.
