Set on a Hebridean island, the story revolves around the Ramsay family and their guests during a long summer. Mr. Ramsay, a cold and self-pitying philosopher, contrasts sharply with his warm and nurturing wife, Mrs. Ramsay, who is the heart of their household. Central to the narrative is young James Ramsay's yearning to visit the lighthouse, which his father stifles. As summer fades, the looming presence of war and death transforms their lives and alters the meaning of their eventual journey to the lighthouse.
