When their father dies, leaving his entire estate to his first wife's son, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, along with their youngest sister and their mother, the second Mrs Dashwood, are left penniless and homeless. A kind and generous relative, however, offers them a small cottage to live in. As they all try to settle into their new lives, the wild and impulsive Marianne goes through a whirlwind romance with the gallant and impetuous John Willoughby and the quiet, reserved Elinor develops an affection for Edward Ferrars, the brother-in-law of her half-brother, John Dashwood. But love is never easy .
