The story follows Heidi, a Swiss orphan who thrives in the mountains with her grandfather after being taken from her home by her Aunt Detie. She forms a close bond with Peter, a goatherd, and visits his blind grandmother. However, her life changes when she is taken to Frankfurt to care for Clara, a girl with a disability. Struggling with homesickness, Heidi's emotional turmoil leads to sleepwalking, prompting her return to the mountains, where she rekindles her faith and deepens her relationship with her grandfather.
