Before George Orr slips into a dreaming sleep induced by Doctor Haber, there are 7 billion undernourished people on an overcrowded Earth. Dream of space, of elbow room, of freedom, the Doctor says... The sleeper dreams of burying mounds of corpses... When he wakes, he 'remembers' there had been a Plague. Pollution-caused cancer had wiped out 6 billion people - ten years ago.
