Gilliat, an adept sailor shunned by Guernsey society due to his enigmatic mother and a haunted home, finds himself in love with the beautiful Déruchette, the niece of a local ferry owner. When a disaster strikes the ferry, Déruchette declares she will marry the man who can rescue it.
