On July 4, 1862, a young clergyman teaching Mathematics at Christ Church College in Oxford went on an outing with the three daughters of the Dean. The cheerful group enjoyed a boating trip late into the afternoon, filled with laughter, joy, songs, and stories. On that memorable day, in the sunny waters of the river, Alice was born. Alice, the heroine destined to become as legendary as Cinderella and Snow White, would be adored by generations and captivate millions of readers of all ages. The two books by Lewis Carroll that emerged are now classics. In the first, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," the young heroine gets lost in a captivating dream in a fairy-tale land; in the second, "Through the Looking-Glass," she experiences the strangest adventures in an inverted reality.
