Set against the backdrop of a violent tornado in 1884, the story follows the three-masted schooner Castor, which becomes a wreck off the Peruvian coast. Captain Philip Horn leads the ship, carrying a valuable cargo and three passengers: Mrs. William Cliff, traveling to settle her late husband's affairs; Miss Edna Markham, a school-teacher heading to a new position; and her brother Ralph, whom she is determined to support. Their survival amidst the chaos unfolds as they confront the challenges of the storm and their uncertain futures.
