Dalo by sa povedať, že McCarthy rozbíja žáner westernu, prevracia ho naruby a používa ho ako rám pre obraz sveta, v ktorom niet rozdielu medzi civilizáciou a barbarstvom. Kľúčovou postavou tohto románu je sudca Holden - a to je teda skutočne zvláštne stvorenie. Je vzdelaný, krutý, filozofujúci a občas sa zdá, že aj fyzicky, či duševne nadľudský. V jednom zo svojich hlbokých monológov vyhlasuje, že „vojna je Boh“, a že pravá existencia je len tá, ktorá je podrobená násiliu. Kto je teda v skutočnosti sudca Holden? Sila, ktorá neustále obnovuje cyklus násilia v ľudskej histórii? A tak ako každá skutočne dobrá kniha, ani táto nedáva odpovede. Len ticho kladie otázky.
